INTD 2300 The Digital Revolution from Ada to AI (3)
This course, taught by a historian and a computer scientist, will explore the history and the technology of the digital revolution from the 1830s to the present. It will provide a historical analysis and framework in order to understand the relationship between technology and society. It will begin with Ada Lovelace and the conception of a general-purpose computer and culminate with the creation of artificial intelligence. We will study the engineering and computer science that underlies artificial intelligence and machine learning, and the course will cover the basics of AI, working with data, and some introductory-level programming and computer architecture concepts. We will debate two schools of thought that have developed since 20th century computer scientist Alan Turing asked whether machines would ever be able to think like humans: those who pursue artificial intelligence versus those who focus on ways to use machines to augment human intelligence. We will also discuss the ethical issues involved in digital technology, social media, and artificial intelligence.

Students will have opportunities to engage with medical practitioners, activists, and scholars. INTD 7010 Publicly Engaged Scholarship I (1)
The Publicly Engaged Scholarship (PES) graduate certificate program gives you the opportunity to work on a collaborative, community-engaged project that resonates with your personal and scholarly commitments. In doing so, it provides you with the chance to reflect on your identity as a scholar and the ways that collaboration and engagement can enrich your discipline and scholarly practices while addressing pressing social issues. This course will help you take steps toward realizing the aspirations that led you to apply for the PES Program. Throughout the semester the way you conceptualize public scholarship and your own project will evolve in response to ongoing conversations with your community partners and collaborators, insights from assigned readings and public scholarship within your discipline, discussions with peers, community leaders, and faculty in the PES Program, as well as your composition of a project proposal.
INTD 7020 Publicly Engaged Scholarship 2 (1)
This one-credit course builds on INTD 7010 by adding more depth and considering additional dimensions of public engagement for students practicing public engagement. During our weekly meetings we will extend our conversations about the theory and practice of public engagement. Our readings will push us further in our thinking about the theories behind quality community partnerships. Our conversations with guest faculty and community partners will help us to think more carefully about how these theories and methods can be applied in practice. We will also investigate ways of developing outreach initiatives and consider how rigorous assessment and evaluation can guide our work. Throughout the seminar sequence, our goal is to complicate, deepen, and rethink our ideas about what public engagement is and what it can be.
INTD 7030 Publicly Engaged Scholarship 3 (1)
The final one-credit course facilitates your creation of a portfolio documenting your publicly engaged scholarship. The goal of the portfolio is to offer a space for thoughtful reflection, for connecting theory to practice, for establishing a record of your publicly engaged project, and for articulating your deepening understanding of the complex tensions within your particular publicly engaged scholarship.
