Sustainable Urbanism Certificate (Graduate)

The Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Urbanism provides students with advanced training in the practices essential to creating sustainable, resilient, and equitable urban environments. This program prepares graduate students to critically examine the built environment and its impact on urban communities and ecological systems. With an emphasis on both rigorous academic study and applied learning, the certificate equips students with real-world tools to address contemporary urban challenges—such as affordable housing, resource management, environmental resilience, and climate adaptation—and propose solutions that are sustainable, fair, and responsive to diverse populations. Through exploring strategies aligned with global frameworks like the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, students gain the advanced skills to propose urban solutions that promote social equity, environmental stewardship, and quality of life across communities.
Graduate students enrolled in the School of Architecture and Built Environment can add the Certificate in Sustainable Urbanism in conjunction with their graduate degree programs.
Students intending to take the certificate should submit a declaration form to the Sustainable Urbanism (SURB) program director. For other questions please contact the Program Director and visit the Sustainable Urbanism pages on the School of Architecture and Built Environment's website.
