Accounting

At the undergraduate level, the Freeman School offers an accounting major and minor, as well as a joint BSM-MACCT degree path for students in the Bachelor of Science in Management (BSM) program.

A major in accounting emphasizes the knowledge and analytical skills needed to succeed in a dynamic business environment. Accountants are trusted to measure, analyze, and communicate financial information to both internal and external decision-makers, and the program therefore emphasizes not only technical skills, but critical thinking and soft skills necessary to succeed. For those states that require only 120 college-level course credits to sit for the CPA exam upon graduation, the accounting major will prepare students well. Students who plan to move to a state that requires more than 120 college credits to sit for the CPA exam, our Joint BSM-Master of Accounting (MACCT) graduate program should be considered (see below for more detail).

At the graduate level, the Master of Accounting (MACCT) program prepares college graduates for successful careers in public accounting firms and major corporations. Through the comprehensive 30 credit-hour program, students will work closely with a faculty adviser to design an individualized curriculum based on their career aspirations, including state-specific CPA requirements, and specialization interests.

Freeman undergraduates may apply for admission to the Joint BSM-MACCT program in the junior year and earn both the BSM and MACCT degrees concurrently, while allowing their undergraduate merit-based scholarships to remain in place for all five (5) years of study.

In both the undergraduate and graduate programs, students will gain a comprehensive foundation through courses including financial and managerial accounting, analytics, auditing, taxation, and accounting information systems. Electives allow students to further tailor their education to their goals, exploring areas such as risk management, forensic accounting, and advanced taxation.
