Newcomb-Tulane College Core Curriculum Course Lists
The Newcomb-Tulane College Core Curriculum is the foundational academic experience for all Newcomb-Tulane College students. With a commitment to academic breadth and depth, the core helps students cultivate a spirit of intellectual inquiry, hone their critical thinking and communication skills, and become informed, engaged, and conscientious global citizens.
The core curriculum—which is composed of a minimum of 30 credits—is divided into three parts: proficiency requirements, distribution of knowledge requirements, and additional requirements. A course approved for both a proficiency and a distribution core requirement can only satisfy one (not both) of those requirements. To ensure that students experience the breadth of knowledge at the collegiate level, AP, IB, and Cambridge A-Level courses can be used to satisfy proficiency requirements only in Formal Reasoning and Foreign Language.
Because course offerings vary by term, students should review the Schedule of Classes each semester to confirm available core requirements and consult their academic advisor for guidance.

First-Year Seminar
The First-Year Seminar is an interdisciplinary experience, driven by intellectual curiosity, active learning, and experiential education. These courses bring together small groups of students and faculty to explore academic topics from multiple academic perspectives.
Because course offerings vary by term, students should review the Schedule of Classes each semester to confirm available core requirements and consult their academic advisor for guidance. You can review additional information, details, and guidance about first-year seminar course offerings on the college's First-Year Seminars website.
Public Service
Academic service learning is an educational experience based upon a collaborative partnership between the university and local, national, and international communities and partner organizations. Service learning guides students in applying academic knowledge to meet community-identified needs and address systemic inequities. Through structured reflection, students develop critical thinking skills, deepen their academic learning, and gain an enhanced sense of civic responsibility and social justice.
Because course offerings vary by term, students should review the Schedule of Classes each semester to confirm available core requirements and consult their academic advisor for guidance. The Center for Public Service provides additional information, details, and guidance about Service Learning course offerings on their website. Visit https://cps.tulane.edu/academics to learn more.
Race and Inclusion
Because course offerings vary by term, students should review the Schedule of Classes each semester to confirm available core requirements and consult their academic advisor for guidance.
