Sociology, MA

Eligibility Requirements:
- Current Tulane sociology major in junior or senior year
- Minimum overall GPA of 3.0
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 in sociology major coursework
Program Description
The 4+1 M.A. program in Sociology serves Tulane sociology majors who are interested in pursuing careers in policy research, data analysis, non-profit leadership, government agencies, market research, social justice advocacy, or further graduate education. The program allows Tulane undergraduates majoring in Sociology to attain an MA degree in 1 additional year.
The 4+1 program emphasizes training in broadly applicable skills with particular emphasis on research design, quantitative and qualitative methods, and data analysis. These transferable skills prepare graduates for diverse career paths in primarily non-academic sectors where advanced research capabilities and analytical thinking are valued. Students can also use the 4+1 training as a springboard for further graduate-level training in Sociology and related disciplines
The M.A. in Sociology requires a minimum of 30 credit hours and a cumulative grade point average of 3.000. Details about program requirements can be found below.
See Recommended Plan of Study below.
Curriculum Requirements
1. Complete the requirements for the BA in Sociology. Students can request that up to two 6000-level courses (6 credit hours) taken for the BA also be applied as graduate credit toward the MA degree.
2. Complete a total of 30 graduate credit hours for the MA degree. This includes:
a. Up to 6 credit hours from undergraduate 6000–level courses (see #1 above)
b. An additional 24 credit hours (8 courses) at the 6000-level or above taken during the graduate year:
1. Six sociology courses at the 6000-level or above
2. Two courses outside sociology at the 6000-level or above
Strongly Recommended:
Students are encouraged to design their graduate coursework to align with their career goals and professional interests. Students should consider:
- Selecting courses from the Sociology Ph.D. program's theory, research methods, and professionalization sequences when available. See the [Ph.D. program course requirements] for the full list of graduate courses.
- Exploring cross-disciplinary coursework through the Sociology Ph.D. program's concentrations in Gender & Sexuality Studies, Africana Studies, Latin American Studies, Environmental Studies, Urban Studies and Built Environment, Health and Medicine, or Politics and Movements. See [Ph.D. concentrations] for suggested coursework and faculty contacts.
Consulting with the Director of Graduate Studies to develop a coherent plan of study that builds on undergraduate training and maximizes transferable skills.
