ANTH 6830 Aztec and Maya Literature

A survey of indigenous literatures of Mesoamerica focusing on Aztec, QuichE9, Tzotzil, and Yucatecan Maya sources and covering myths, chronicles, poetry, songs, folktales, proverbs, prayers, incantations, and riddles. Topics include elements of style, relationship between narrative and pictures, principles of translation, Aztec and Maya views of the Spanish Conquest, and European influences on the content and style of Mesoamerican literature.
