Assessment of the Baroque in Spains American viceroyalties during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in its relation to contemporary European literary practices, political culture, and religious values. Readings of works by Europeans (Gngora, Quevedo, Caldern de la Barca, Gracin) as well as Americans of European descent (Balbuena, Sor Juana Ins de la Cruz, Espinosa Medrano, Peralta Barnuevo). Also considered are modern re-interpretations of the place of the Baroque in Spanish Americas cultural tradition (Picn Salas, Lezama Lima, Paz, Sarduy).
