ARHS 661 Visuality, Representation and the Body

Examines the ways in which artistspainters, sculptors, film makers, performance artistsfrom the 19th- and 20th-centuries have constructed and organized representations of the human body. Dependent upon the writings of Lacan and other post-Freudian theorists, the body will be examined as a site across which history, memory and cultural politics have been played out. Artists studied will include Cassatt, Duchamp, Eakins, Madonna, Mapplethorpe, OKeefe, Lorna Simpson, and Kiki Smith.
